It may be the dog days of summer, but the Boys & Girls Club of Fernley is already thinking ahead to the school year. The Club, celebrating nearly three months of operation, will host a free day at the Fernley In-Town Park for current and future Club members and their families on Aug. 17, from 3-7 p.m.
The event is open to everyone and will feature bounce houses, a barbecue, water games, giveaways, and more. Parents and members will also be able to sign up for free Boys & Girls Club memberships and attend orientation all in one spot.
When school starts on Aug. 30, the Club will operate out of three sites--Fernley Elementary School, Cottonwood Elementary School and East Valley Elementary--and will focus on before- and after-school programming. In addition to building friendships in a safe, adult-supervised environment, kids will have access to homework help, computers, arts, sports, leadership, and more.
Since opening day in June, the Club has seen phenomenal growth, already drawing approximately 250 youth and teen members. As many as 80 kids attend summer camp daily, attracted by activities, field trips and new friendships. More growth is expected in the fall, said Fernley Area Director Mary Nolan.
"It has been an amazing experience seeing this community embrace the Boys & Girls Club," Nolan said.
"Already, we've seen the positive benefits of these connections. We're looking forward to what the school year has in store for us."During the last week of summer break (Aug. 23-27), the program will be closed so schools can get ready for the start of the school year.
For parents who cannot attend the free event, registration for the before- and after-school program will also be held at Cottonwood Elementary from 3-6 p.m. from Wednesday, Aug. 25, through Friday, Aug. 27. Fees are $5 for the morning session and $3 for the afternoon session, and registrations must be received by the Friday prior to the child attending the program. Parents are required to attend orientation sessions.
The Boys & Girls Club of Fernley will be closed the week of Aug. 23-27 so schools can get ready for the first day of school on Aug. 30.
During the week of Aug. 16-20, the program will be in the gym at Fernley Intermediate School. Parents will need to enter by the main office and go directly to the gym. There will be signage directing them to the correct location. The cafeteria will be closed for cleaning.
