<h1>Natural water slides make Denny Creek a popular and fun hike�/h1>

<p>The heat is rising and the kids are looking listless, wanting something to do. Grab a picnic lunch and your swimgear and head up to the Denny Creek <a href="/WaterGames/pro3/index.html"><font color="#0000ff">Water Slides</font></a><font color="#0000ff">.</font></p> <p>It’s a great local hike that children and adults of all ages will enjoy.</p> <p>Adults will love the cascading waterfalls and children will delight in a natural waterslide that sends streams of water down a bedrock slab more than 200 feet long. It’s an all-ages hike that takes less than an hour.</p> <p>Situated on the north side of Interstate 90, take Exit 47 and turn left to go over the highway. Turn right, go under the overpass and take a left, watching for signs for Denny Creek Campground and Franklin Falls. After three miles, you will cross the creek and see Denny Creek Campground on your left.</p> <p>Just a few hundred yards further is the parking area for Franklin Falls and further past that, limited parking for Denny Creek and Melawkwa Lake. You’ll need a Northwest Forest Pass to park here, so make sure you stop by the North Bend Ranger Station on the way in.</p> <p>The Denny Creek Water Slide Trail is in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, so it’s necessary to fill out the permit at the trailhead for day or overnight use. After attaching it to your pack, point the kiddos up the trail. Right off the bat, you’ll be rewarded with a forested trail that looks as if it came straight from the Ewok village in “Return of the Jedi.”</p> <p>Huge evergreens loom overhead while skunk cabbage, devil’s club and sword fern carpet the lower trail.</p> <p>After a quarter-mile, you’ll cross a bridge that spans the lower section of Denny Creek. This is a great place to take a picture; just be careful, as the sides are definitely not designed for little ones.</p> <p>This is the creek that you’ll continue to follow up to the slippery slabs.</p> <p>In just a few more minutes, you’ll cross under I-90, a huge monolith that is a true testament to what construction really can be.</p> <p>Completed in 1981, the bridge stands more than 200 feet above the ground, and was built without scaffolding in order to protect the ecosystem below.</p> <p>Have your kids try to figure out the purpose of the holes in the roadbed.</p> <p>You should get some pretty creative answers.</p> <p>At the one-mile mark, the trail enters the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area, comprised of 394,000 acres and more than 700 mountain lakes. Save these hikes for another day and continue on for about a quarter-mile.</p> <p>As you round the bend, the kids will start to complain, but will stop immediately when they see children sliding and playing in Denny Creek.</p> <p>Cross the creek on the large boulders, (a bridge washed out a few years ago) and find a nice sunny spot to drop your gear. Now is the time to feed and put sunscreen on your children. If you don’t do it now, you’ll be hard pressed to pull them out of their fun in the water!</p> <p>In the mid- to late summer, a moderate amount of water flows down the bedrock slabs to create natural waterslides complete with a shallow <a href="http://www.inflatable-global.com/WaterGames/Inflatable-Pool/index.html"><font color="#0000ff">pool</font></a> at the bottom.</p> <p>Encourage your kids to periodically get out of the water and warm up on the rocks as the water is very cold this high in the mountains. If you venture up the creek farther, there is also a cascading waterfall to run under.</p> <p>For the more adventurous and those wanting to get away from the crowds, keep climbing up the trail to Keekwulee Falls and eventually to Melawkwa Lake, both easily accessible in a day hike.</p> <p>Relatively fit children over 10 shouldn’t have a problem with either one. The younger ones will be plenty excited to stay at the rockslides.</p> <p>Keep in mind that you are hiking over a mile uphill. Water is necessary for all hikers (at least 20 ounces per hiker).</p> <p>You should not drink the water from the creek, as you don’t know the condition of the water upstream.</p> <p>This is a truly amazing place right in our backyard.</p> <p>Have a great time out there, and see you on the trail!</p> <p>Luke Talbott is the owner of Compass Outdoor Adventures, a company dedicated to getting families and children out in the wilderness.</p>
