Take the kids out to the ballgame and the bounce house

This Sunday, The Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest returns to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The festival will feature more than 20 attractions and activities from bounce houses and baseball video games to slides and batting cages.

"It's fantastic," says Matt DeMargel, director of media relations and promotions for the Durham Bulls. "We've had it here for several years now. It's a lot of fun for the families. They can combine the fun of minor league baseball with inflatables and games."

DeMargel says the free festival, just outside the main gates of DBAP, is an extra benefit for the Sunday crowd, which is typically young families. The Durham Bulls play the Syracuse Chiefs that day.

"It's mostly about having a great time at the ballpark right before the Durham Bulls game," says Isaac Bearg, spokesman for the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest, in its seventh season. "Folks can take part in three free hours of fun. Then they can go home or go right into the game."

This year, the Fun Fest will visit more than 40 minor league baseball parks across the country with stops in places such as Harrisburg, Pa., and Charleston, S.C.

"It's the world's largest traveling baseball celebration," Bearg says.

Along with the interactive attractions, he says, there's a baseball museum in a giant trailer that houses more than 100 years of baseball memories. You can see mementoes like a 1938 Joe DiMaggio Wheaties box, Michael Jordan's Birmingham Barons rookie card, a Columbus Clippers jersey signed by Derek Jeter, vintage jerseys, mitts and bats.

Kids even get to take home souvenirs such as personalized Sports Illustrated Kids covers and Travelodge baseball cards, Bearg says.

"Everywhere we go, we have fathers and sons, mothers and daughters just coming out and having a good time," he says. "People say it's a great experience to share with their kids."
